that the annual Charles Stanley Direct Cowes Classic Week races will take place between Monday 17th and Friday 21st July 2017. During this period heavy concentrations of sailing vessels of all types will be racing in the Solent, in the approaches to Cowes Harbour, Southampton Water and within the Precautionary Area. Mariners should be particularly vigilant and should maintain an efficient lookout for large vessels and sailing vessels and, at all times, navigate with extreme caution in the area.Starts and Finishes within and in the Approaches to Cowes Harbour
The Charles Stanley Direct Cowes Classic Week races will be from the Royal London Yacht Club Line or from a committee boat in the Solent. Shoreline start times will be from 1030hrs each day; full details will be distributed to the commercial harbour users by the RLYC in the Race Notification document 24hrs prior to the event. The Chief Race Officer controlling the shoreline starts may be contacted on VHF Channel 69 call sign ‘Royal London Race Control’ throughout the start sequences. Vessels may enter or depart Cowes via the main fairway or the Small Craft Channel depending upon their size and draught and the direction of approach or departure.
Small craft including those racing or preparing to race should be vigilant for large and regular commercial traffic including Red Funnel ferries and cargo vessels which cannot safely navigate outside of the main fairways and are reminded of their duty under Rule 9 of the Collision Regulations to keep avoid impeding their safe passage.
